New Year

1 January.

The start of the Gregorian calendar year. Some sources list this alongside a separate New Year's Day entry when a country grants more than one day off around the turn of the year.

New Year Holiday

The days immediately after 1 January, where the break runs longer than one day.

An additional day off attached to New Year's Day. Countries that treat the turn of the year as a multi-day break — much of Eastern Europe, Japan, and parts of Asia — grant these beyond 1 January.

International Women's Day

8 March.

Marks the struggle for women's rights, with roots in the labour movement of the early 1900s. A full public holiday across the post-Soviet states; a half day for women only in China; and an observance in most of the rest of the world.

The next available weekday when 8 March falls on a weekend.

Eid al-Fitr

1 Shawwal, the day after Ramadan ends. The date depends on a moon sighting and is often confirmed only a day or two in advance.

The festival that ends Ramadan, and the largest holiday of the year across the Muslim world. Most countries grant two to three consecutive days; Indonesia and Malaysia extend it further with collective leave. Because the date is set by moon sighting, calendars published far in advance are provisional.

Nowruz

The March equinox, around 20–21 March.

The Persian new year, marking the start of spring. A public holiday in Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, and the Central Asian republics, where it runs for several days.

Remembrance Day

11 November in most of the Commonwealth.

Honours those who died in war, marked by two minutes' silence and the poppy. A public holiday in most Canadian provinces; an observance in the United Kingdom, where the main commemoration moves to the preceding Sunday.

Eid al-Adha

10 Dhu al-Hijjah, about seventy days after Eid al-Fitr, confirmed by moon sighting.

The Feast of Sacrifice, marking the end of the Hajj pilgrimage and commemorating Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son. Alongside Eid al-Fitr it is one of the two principal Islamic holidays, and is observed with several days off in most Muslim-majority countries.

Eid al-Adha Holiday

The days following Eid al-Adha.

The additional days off attached to Eid al-Adha, which is commonly a three- or four-day break.

Independence Day Holiday

An additional day off attached to Independence Day.

Where the national day is treated as a multi-day break, the additional days appear under this name.

Independence Day

The anniversary of the country's independence — a different date in every country.

The national day of a country that gained independence from another state, and typically its most important secular holiday. Over a hundred countries observe one, on dates ranging across the whole calendar.

Teachers' Day

5 October in many countries; other dates elsewhere.

Honours teachers. Where it is a day off it is usually limited to schools rather than the wider economy.

Constitution Day

The anniversary of the adoption of the constitution — varies by country.

Marks the adoption of a country's constitution. A major public holiday in Norway, Poland, Denmark, Japan, Mexico and South Korea, among others.
