New Year's Day

1 January. In many countries the day off moves to the following Monday when it falls on a weekend.

The first day of the Gregorian calendar year, and the most widely observed public holiday in the world — a day off in almost every country that uses the Gregorian calendar, regardless of religion. Several countries extend the break to 2 January, and some in East Asia keep both the Gregorian and a separate lunar new year.

Epiphany

6 January.

Marks the visit of the Magi and closes the Christmas season. A public holiday in Spain, Italy, Austria, Greece, Poland, Sweden and Finland, and in three German states — one of the standard examples of a holiday that is regional rather than national.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The third Monday of January in the United States.

Honours the civil rights leader, observed near his birthday of 15 January. A US federal holiday since 1986, and observed in all fifty states since 2000.

President's Day

The third Monday of February in the United States.

Officially Washington's Birthday, though most states treat it as honouring all presidents. Moved to a fixed Monday in 1971 to create a long weekend.

Emancipation Day

1 August across the British Caribbean; other dates elsewhere.

Marks the abolition of slavery. Observed across the Caribbean, in parts of Canada and the United States, and in several African states.

Good Friday

The Friday before Easter Sunday.

Commemorates the crucifixion, and is the most widely observed Christian public holiday after Christmas. Together with Easter Monday it produces a four-day weekend in much of Europe, the Commonwealth and Latin America. In several countries it also carries trading or entertainment restrictions beyond the day off itself.

Memorial Day

The last Monday of May in the United States; other dates elsewhere.

Honours military personnel who died in service. In the United States it also marks the unofficial start of summer.

Constitution Day

The anniversary of the adoption of the constitution — varies by country.

Marks the adoption of a country's constitution. A major public holiday in Norway, Poland, Denmark, Japan, Mexico and South Korea, among others.

Labor Day

1 May in most countries; the first Monday of September in the United States and Canada.

The workers' holiday. Almost everywhere it falls on 1 May; in the United States and Canada it was deliberately placed in September to avoid the associations of May Day.

Veterans' Day

11 November in the United States.

Honours all who have served in the armed forces, distinct from Memorial Day, which honours those who died in service.

Thanksgiving Day

The fourth Thursday of November in the United States; the second Monday of October in Canada.

A harvest festival that has become the largest domestic travel holiday in the United States. Canada keeps its own six weeks earlier, matching its earlier harvest.

Christmas Day

25 December. The day off moves to the following weekday when it falls on a weekend.

The most widely observed public holiday after New Year's Day, a day off in the great majority of countries including many with no Christian majority, where it functions as a secular end-of-year holiday. Orthodox churches following the Julian calendar keep it on 7 January instead.
